HOW TO Start a Bread ministry at your church –

Picture
Most ministries start with two or three like-minded people getting together and agreeing that they should “do something” about an issue. You might desire to expand your hunger work beyond food collections to get at the causes of hunger and you have found that Bread for the World has been doing this for the U.S. and for the world for over 40 years. Or you might want to do God’s Justice through advocacy and you have chosen the issue of hunger. Either way, you will be working on the world’s biggest problem. In each of these following steps, prayerfully ask God to guide you.

Educate your congregation/parish about the opportunities and benefits of hunger advocacy.
  • Get your pastor/priest involved or keep them informed
  • As people join your Bread group, have 2 or 3 meetings a year with the following:
    • Prayer
    • A short program (videos, speakers, calls with congressional staffers)
    • A discussion of pressing hunger issues
    • End with a letter writing session to members of Congress
  • Communicate with your congregation/parish using the following:
    • Bulletin inserts
    • Videos highlighting hunger issues
    • Posters and displays
    • Articles in the church newspaper
    • Announcements during the services about hunger Sundays or special events
    • Adult classes and forums
Count the letters, calls, emails and visits to inform your group and congregation
